Since we established what makes this guitar so amazing, it’s time for some bad news – it’s a quite expensive guitar! In fact, it’s significantly more expensive than Martin D28 or D18. But despite of that, I wouldn’t say that it’s overpriced. This guitar is a real piece of art.

A lot of guitarists who are searching for a high-end acoustic guitar often can’t decide whether they should take the D-41 or D-42 model. Which one of them is actually better?

These guitars are really similar, although the D-41 model is slightly more affordable. They also have a bit different inlays on the fretboard (the D-42 has a bit more vintage character). The bracing is also different.
Choosing one of these guitars is really challenging, so make sure to check out the video below to hear the sound differences between these models.
My Thoughts About High-End Martin Guitars
I have to admit that I’m a huge fan of guitars manufactured by Martin. Although I don’t have the D-41 in my collection yet, I had the pleasure to play on it several times. In fact, I had the chance to directly compare a few of the most expensive Martin guitars.
It’s pretty clear that these most expensive Martins (D-41, D-42 and D-45) are different than any other guitars available on the market. They look, sound and feel like true pieces of art. Undoubtedly, any collector of guitars will notice that they’re one-of-a-kind.
For me, the D-41 and D-42 were on the same level, so I’d stick with one of these models. The D-45 is the most expensive one, but considering how good these other guitars are, it’s really difficult to choose that one
I know that some guitarists debate whether high-end guitars are worth it are not and I understand that. It’s totally possible to find other great guitars available at relatively low prices. However, none of these guitars from the low and middle shelf can compete with high-end Martins. That’s for sure!

Gibson SJ200 vs Martin D-41
If you’re searching for a high-end guitar, you’re probably aware that Martin is not the only manufacturer of fantastic guitars from the highest shelf. Gibson is an another guitar trusted and loved by a lot of professional musicians.
So the question is: can a high-end Gibson guitar compete with a high-end Martin?
Again, it is really difficult to give a clear answer to that question. It’s all really subjective, so while some guitarists prefer Martin guitars, other ones stick to Gibsons.
Gibson SJ200 is an acoustic guitar available at the similar price level as Martin D-41, so quite often guitarists directly compare these guitars. Both of them sound great, but personally I’d stick with the Martin.
What about you? Check out the sound comparison below and see whether you prefer the SJ200 or D-41!
Cheaper Alternatives
If you have a feeling that Martin D-41 is out of your reach right now, that’s not a big problem! There’s still quite a lot of other fantastic acoustic guitars that are available at lower prices.
Of course, choosing a new acoustic guitar will heavily depend on the size of your budget and your own personal preferences. Still, here’s a few more gear recommendations based on my own experience.
Firstly, you should definitely consider getting the Martin D-28. This is one of the most iconic dreadnought acoustic guitars of all time! It is loved by a lot of famous guitarists. In comparison with the D-41, it’s way more affordable. Although it doesn’t look as luxury as the model reviewed in today’s article, it’s definitely a great alternative option for those who can’t afford getting the D-41.
Alternatively, you can also consider getting the Takamine P5DC. This is a high quality acoustic-electric guitar designed for performing artists. If you love playing gigs and you often record in a studio, choosing this model may be a fantastic option for you. The P5DC sounds very balanced and natural when it’s plugged into an amp – and that’s a huge advantage!
If your budget is really low but you still want to get a Martin guitar, check out the Martin DX Johnny Cash Signature. This is actually one of the cheapest guitars made by Martin! It may not be as unique and great sounding as Martin D-41, but it’s still a great option for guitarists with a tight budget. Whether you love Johnny Cash or not, you will definitely benefit from adding this model to your collection.
