Specs & Pricing

fender kurt cobain jaguar

Fender Kurt Cobain Jaguar is heavily inspired by the original 1965 Fender Jaguar used by Kurt back in the ’90s. High versatility and extreme attention to detail make this Jaguar one of the most interesting offset guitars in the world.

The guitar features an alder body and a very comfortable C-shaped neck. It has a bound rosewood fretboard and a classic Jaguar scale length (24 inches). In addition, there’s also a vintage-style floating tremolo wit the Adjusto-matic bridge.

What’s important, the guitar is equipped with two amazing humbuckers:

  • DiMarzio DP103 PAF 36th Anniversary (neck)
  • DiMarzio DP100 Super Distortion (bridge)

This pickup setting allows you to easily get “that classic” grunge tone. Surely, it’s a great option for all lovers of this kind of music. But to be honest, the guitar works well on the clean channel too. And it responds very well with all the guitar pedals!

What’s interesting, the guitar comes in a hard-shell case with an exclusive book about Kurt Cobain. That’s a really cool bonus for all fans of Kurt!

When it comes to pricing, it’s not cheap. In fact, it’s quite an expensive guitar. Considering the fact that it’s manufactured in Mexican factory that makes mainly mid-level Fenders, it’s definitely not the most affordable Jaguar out there.

Nevertheless, if you’re a fan of Nirvana, you just have to deal with the fact that signature guitars are generally more expensive than the rest.

Who Is It For?

Fender Kurt Cobain Jaguar will be ideal for all enthusiasts of rock, indie and grunge. It’s a really versatile guitar, so it can be used in a really wide range of other genres as well. Whether you’re into fat riffs or cleaner tones, this Jaguar will most certainly be a good choice!

As you can imagine, this guitar is mainly made for all fans of Kurt Cobain. Using the same kind of gear as your idol is an absolutely amazing experience, so if you love Nirvana, I highly recommend checking out this axe.

What’s important, it doesn’t matter whether you’re a complete beginner or a more advanced player – this Jaguar is suitable for all-level players.

Disadvantages of Fender Kurt Cobain Jaguar

The main disadvantage of this guitar is the price, which is pretty high. Considering the fact that it’s not made in Fender’s most reputable factory in California, this definitely one of the main cons of this axe. Although the quality of this guitar is still great, in the end – it’s not made in the US.

Additionally, the amount of knobs and switches may actually be discouraging for a lot of beginners. Although this guitar is suitable for all-level players, I feel like only more advanced players will be able to use the full potential of this guitar.

Lastly, it is impossible to adjust the truss rod without taking the neck off of the guitar. Surely, it won’t be a problem for the vast majority of guitarists, but it may create some issues for a few of them.

Cheaper Alternatives

If your budget is too tight, don’t worry – there’s a few really good and affordable alternatives out there too! Any lover of Jaguars will most likely enjoy the guitars listed below as well.

One of the cheapest Jaguars available on the market. Although it’s not a Fender, it still offers a really good quality. I actually own that guitar and I recently wrote a detailed review about it – feel free to check it out.

The guitar features a poplar body with a very comfortable C-shaped neck. Although it doesn’t have DiMarzio humbuckers like the original Fender Kurt Cobain Jaguar, it still offers a lot of punch and versatility.

Considering the relatively low price, I think that it’s one of the best options for guitarists who are on a tight budget. If you’re specifically looking for a reliable short-scale Jaguar, this is the way to go. Bear in mind that this Squier is currently manufactured in Indonesia.

Here’s my video review of this guitar (other guitar reviews are also available on my YouTube channel).

Fender Player Jaguar

Another really cool Jaguar which is far more affordable than the Fender Kurt Cobain Jaguar. Although in comparison with Kurt’s signature Jag this one is a bit more limited, it’s still an amazing choice for a lot of guitar players.

The guitar is available in a few different color versions and you can find it with either HS or HH pickup setting. So whether you’re looking for something versatile or made specifically for grunge music, this is the way to go.

Personally, I think that the quality of Player Series is comparable with less expensive Squier Classic Vibe Series. But in the end, it all depends on what you’re looking for!

Fender Vintera ’60s Modified Jaguar

Fender Vintera ’60s Modified Jaguar is a bit less expensive than the signature Kurt Cobain Jaguar and it offers absolutely amazing quality. In fact, for some players it may be even better and more versatile choice.

Just like the Fender Player Jaguar, this Jag is also manufactured in Mexico. As a result, the quality of this axe is really good. Overall, it’s suitable for all-level players and it can be used in a wide range of genres.

The regular version of this guitar features two single-coil pickups, but the modified version with two humbuckers will be better for all lovers of grunge and Nirvana. In addition, the guitar features a classic Jaguar controls, while the Kurt Cobain Jaguar is a bit more unusual and modified.

Overall, it will be a great choice for anyone who’s looking for a reliable mid-level short scale Fender Jaguar. I highly recommend checking it out.

About The Original Kurt’s Jaguar

For those who are not aware, Kurt played on a 1965 Fender Jaguar which was heavily modified. He bought this guitar from another guitarist and it was already upgraded. The stock version of this guitar features two single-coil pickups, but they were replaced by two DiMarzio humbuckers.

Kurt used this guitar mainly during the ‘Nevermind’ era. Undoubtedly, this is one of the most iconic guitars owned by this legendary musician.
