What’s The Best Way To Learn These Simple Songs?
1. Learn Basic Chords.
As an intermediate musician with over thirteen years of musical experience, I’m more than sure that these 33 songs are really simple to play. In my opinion, even people who never played the ukulele before, will be able to learn them in a matter of days or even hours. What’s more, in most cases, you will need only four chords: G, C, D and Em. Once you learn how to play these chords and transition between them smoothly, no song will be a problem for you. Here’s a really great video that will help you to understand how to play these easy chords.
I hope that you took some time to play this short video. In my opinion, it describes the theory behind basic chords very well.
2. Tune Your Ukulele.
It is crucial for you stay in tune. If you don’t know how to tune your ukulele by ear, you might need to buy yourself a tuner. Nevertheless, tuning your instrument is really simple. Firstly, remember the order of strings: GCEA. Learning this is the first step to tune your ukulele and start playing some chords. You can also use acronyms to help you remember this order. Personally, I like the acronym ‘Good Chefs Eat A lot). Try to say it out loud a few times. In a matter of seconds, you will remember the GCEA order for the rest of your life.
In terms of actual tuning, here’s a great video that can help with tuning your ukulele. If you have a tuner, that’s awesome! You can skip that video. If you don’t, I highly recommend checking it out. In addition, it will help you practice to pick up sounds by ear.
3. Learn Strumming Techniques.
Simultaneously with the chords, you can start learning the strumming techniques. Although it may sound difficult, in fact it’s really simple. Most songs that you know follow a similar strumming technique, although it may vary from time to time. What’s important, strumming really affects the final sound of the song. If you’re an absolute beginner, I highly recommend the video below. Once you learn these five strumming techniques, you will be able to play hundreds or even thousands of songs on the ukulele (including the Christmas songs from this article). Grab your ukulele and follow the tips from this lesson, it will be really beneficial for your musical growth.
4. Be patient.
We all want to learn something as fast as possible. Nevertheless, you can’t become a skilled musician in one day. It requires a lot of practice and patience. Here’s my advice – don’t get discouraged if something goes wrong or sounds wrong. Even the most iconic musicians in the world were in the same position as you. Try to practice regularly and you will see that every week you’ll be getting better and better. In addition, seeing your own progress is really motivational. It’s like a snowball effect – the more you can play, the more you want to learn. So stay patient and trust me, the results will come.
